Ado was born on October 24, 2002, in Tokyo, Japan. Her interest in music began in 2014 when software for the video-sharing site Niconico became available on the Nintendo 3DS. She started watching Niconico cover singers on the handheld console and was struck by their anonymity, which influenced her decision to keep her own identity hidden from the public.
By January 10, 2017, Ado uploaded her first cover as an utaite—a type of internet cover singer who typically performs without revealing their face—singing "Kimi no Taion" on Niconico. During her early days, she converted her closet into a bedroom studio, lining it with soundproofing materials she bought online so she could record.
Ado’s first professional feature came in December 2019, when she sang on “Kinmokusei,” a digital single by Whale Don’t Sleep, also known as Kujira. Just three months later, she collaborated as a featured vocalist with Jon-Yakitory on the single “Shikabanēze,” released March 29, 2020.
In May 2020, she contributed two covers—“Call Boy” by Syudou and “Taema Naku Ai iro” by Shishi Shishi—for Pony Canyon’s compilation album Palette4. Both tracks were included to showcase the vocal talent of emerging utaite artists within the growing online Japanese music community.
On October 15, 2020, Ado announced her major label debut with Universal Music Japan’s Virgin Music sublabel. Her first single, “Usseewa,” written and produced by Syudou, was released on October 23, 2020, one day ahead of her eighteenth birthday.
“Usseewa” climbed rapidly up the charts, hitting number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, Oricon Digital Singles Chart, and Oricon Streaming Chart. The music video for "Usseewa" reached 5 million YouTube views in under three weeks after its release, and by January 23, 2021, it had amassed 40 million views.
By March 29, 2021, "Usseewa" achieved 100 million streams on Billboard Japan in just 17 weeks—a feat that ranked as the sixth fastest in Japanese chart history. At the time, Ado was the youngest solo performer ever to reach this milestone, being only 18 years old.
Spotify Japan’s Viral 50 ranked "Usseewa" at number one as of December 10, 2020. The single went on to win the MTV Video Music Awards Japan Breakthrough Song award and the 63rd Japan Record Awards Special Prize.
Ado’s second single, “Readymade,” produced by Surii, was released December 24, 2020, as a digital-only track. In February 2021, she released "Gira Gira," written by teniwoha, and just four days later, her official YouTube channel exceeded one million subscribers.
Her fourth single, “Odo,” arrived on April 27, 2021, and was featured on an NHK program focused on Vocaloid producers. The song further cemented her connection to the Vocaloid scene, both in sound and in the digital persona she cultivated.
On June 11, 2021, Ado became the second Japanese female artist ever selected for YouTube’s Artist on the Rise series, which spotlights up-and-coming acts with rapid momentum.
Her debut studio album, Kyōgen, was released on January 26, 2022. In its first week, Kyōgen sold more than 140,000 physical copies in Japan, making Ado the first female Japanese artist to debut with such high sales since Superfly in 2008.
Kyōgen debuted at number one on both the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart and the Oricon Albums chart. Ado became the first woman since Miwa in 2011 to see her debut album reach number one in its first week on the Japanese charts.
Ado’s global reach expanded dramatically in 2022 with the release of "New Genesis," the theme song for One Piece Film: Red. She performed as the singing voice for the character Uta, while Kaori Nazuka handled Uta's speaking voice. “New Genesis” not only topped the Japan Hot 100 but also peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Global 200.
On Apple Music’s Global Top 100, Ado became the first artist ever to land a Japanese-language song at number one. This break into the global mainstream introduced millions of anime and pop fans worldwide to her music.
The soundtrack album Uta’s Songs: One Piece Film Red, released August 10, 2022, sold more than 317,000 physical copies and 108,000 digital downloads in Japan. The album achieved gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan.
Ado became the first artist ever on the Oricon Streaming Chart to have five songs simultaneously in the top five, all tracks from the One Piece soundtrack album. She also became the first artist to hold the top three spots on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 with “New Genesis,” “I’m Invincible,” and “Backlight.”
Following her One Piece success, Ado signed with Geffen Records to distribute her music worldwide, further increasing her international exposure.
Her collaborations extend beyond Japanese producers. She contributed vocals to the Japanese version of "Unforgiven" by LE SSERAFIM, which also featured Nile Rodgers.
The diversity of her collaborations is mirrored in her musical influences. She has cited Vocaloid icons like Hatsune Miku as her greatest inspiration, telling NME, “Vocaloid really is who I am. It’s all of me.” She also named American rock band Kiss and British rock band Queen as early influences, both of which shaped her genre-blending, theatrical delivery.
Ado’s discography covers J-pop, rock, dance, and electronic genres. Reviewers describe her music as ranging from punk-inspired outbursts to delicate ballads, sometimes in the space of a single track. Her debut single “Usseewa” has been called a “punk-influenced song,” while she explores synth-pop on “New Genesis” and raps on “Fleeting Lullaby.”
Her anonymity remains a defining feature. She consistently uses animated avatars and stylized illustrations in music videos and media appearances, declining to show her face in public. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, she linked this choice to her roots in the Vocaloid scene, explaining that she wants listeners to focus solely on her music and artistry.
From December 2022 to January 2023, Ado launched her first Japanese tour, Mirage. The following summer, she completed the Mars tour, performing 14 shows across 11 cities in Japan.
On her 21st birthday, Ado announced her first world tour, “Wish,” which ran from February to April 2024. She followed this in October 2024 with the announcement of the Hibana World Tour, scheduled from April to August 2025, with performances spanning multiple continents.
The Hibana World Tour has been credited as the largest global tour ever by a Japanese artist, with over 500,000 attendees at 33 cities worldwide.

In December 2023, Ado released her first utattemita (cover) album titled Ado’s Utattemita Album, featuring renditions of songs like “Tsumi to Batsu” by Ringo Sheena and “Unravel” by TK. The album peaked at number two on the Oricon Albums chart and number one on Billboard Japan Hot Albums.

In April 2025, she released her first greatest hits collection, Ado’s Best Adobum, which debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums chart and received platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan.
In July 2025, Spotify’s mid-year rankings named Ado the most-streamed Japanese artist outside of Japan, with nearly 80% of her streams coming from international listeners. This achievement ended Yoasobi’s four-year run in the top position for Japanese artists with the most overseas streams.
By July 10, 2025, Ado announced her first dome tour, Yodaka, to celebrate her fifth anniversary as a professional artist. The tour includes major stops in Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka.

In August 2025, Ado’s staff announced she would perform “Magic,” the theme song for the reboot of the Cat’s Eye anime, with lyrics and music by Vocaloid producer Tsumiki. She would also provide the ending theme, covering Anri’s “Cat’s Eye,” first used as the opening for the anime’s 1983 adaptation.
In January 2026, Ado was transferred to Universal Japan’s Capitol Records division. On February 24, 2026, a biography titled Vivarium: Ado and Me was published, accompanied by the single “Vivarium.” The music video for “Vivarium,” released February 28, 2026, marked the first time Ado appeared in live action, showing several scenes where her face is mostly unobscured.
Ado’s portfolio of singles and collaborations includes working with producers like syudou, jon-YAKITORY, Biz, and Hiiragikirai, and international acts such as LE SSERAFIM and Jax Jones.
Her recognition within the Japanese and international music scenes includes winning Best New Asian Artist (Japan) at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards and Song of the Year for “New Genesis” at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan.
Her streaming numbers are record-breaking. “Usseewa” achieved over 100 million plays on Billboard Japan in 17 weeks, and her music videos for “Usseewa,” “Gira Gira,” and “Odo” have each surpassed 100 million views on YouTube.
Ado’s symbol, the blue rose, appears in her branding and artwork as a representation of “wishes coming true.”
She was appointed as a brand ambassador for Georgia Coffee in 2025. Her song “Bouquet for Me” served as the theme track for a commercial campaign, with Ado herself narrating the advertisement.
Her second world tour, announced in October 2024, included a scheduled performance at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines on May 8, 2025.
In 2025, Ado contributed a cover of Akina Nakamori’s 1984 single “Jukkai (1984)” to the tribute compilation Meikyo: Tribute to Akina Nakamori.
As of 2026, Ado’s discography includes two studio albums—Kyōgen and Zanmu—one soundtrack album, three compilation albums, a remix album, and a long list of hit singles, including “Readymade,” “Gira Gira,” “Odo,” “Yoru no Pierrot,” “Aitakute,” “Ashura-chan,” “Show,” “Kura Kura,” and “Elf.”
Ado’s greatest hits album, Ado’s Best Adobum, was released on April 9, 2025, reached number one on the Oricon Albums chart, and was certified platinum, reflecting shipment figures over 250,000 units.
Her performance at Expo 2025 and scheduled appearance at Lollapalooza 2026 demonstrate her international demand and presence on main festival stages.
The blue rose, used in her iconography, stands for “wishes coming true,” tying into her narrative of making the improbable possible in the J-pop industry.
Ado’s total YouTube subscriber count surpassed one million in February 2021, less than four months after debuting as a major artist.
“Usseewa” was the fastest debut single to 100 million streams in Japan by a teenage solo artist, establishing her as a generational voice almost overnight.
For the song “Show,” released September 2023, Ado was commissioned by Universal Studios Japan to promote their Halloween Horror Nights event. The single became her third to top the charts.
In April 2025, nearly 80% of her Spotify streams originated from outside Japan, making her the top Japanese act in global digital consumption that year.
