This update covers United States military actions involving Iran and trade measures involving Canada, with evidence as of 2026-09-09.
United States Central Command said United States forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps tried twice over two days to strike a United States Navy warship with ballistic missiles. Central Command said the forces directed the crews to abandon ship before striking the five vessels and rendering them inoperable.
Iranian state-run media said Iran then launched missiles toward United States targets in Jordan following the tanker strikes. As of September 9, Jordan’s military said its air defenses had intercepted 18 of 20 Iranian ballistic missiles launched toward the country; the other two landed in unpopulated areas, and no casualties were reported.
The United States also announced import bans on Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beer and motorcycles. As of September 9, those restrictions were scheduled to take effect on September 29.
The United States announced higher tariffs on other Canadian goods, including cheese, paper, furniture, metals, motorboats and fishing equipment. As of September 9, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion in United States imports had taken effect.
