“I can’t get it to record at all.” That’s where this conversation begins. We don’t know what device is involved or why it won’t record. If it happens to be an Android phone, an app’s microphone permission is one thing to check. But the technical problem soon gives way to a different question: when you care about someone, what do you share of them?
One person says they don’t post pictures of the other on Facebook—just themselves, flowers, clouds, and their own photography. The reply is an apology: “I post you, sorry.” It sounds affectionate. The other person seems comfortable with it. Still, there’s a useful difference between believing someone is okay with a particular photo and asking them. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s advice is simple: get the person’s okay before posting their picture.
Then comes a favorite photo, and a tiny missed exchange. “You never sent me that picture that you took me.” “I forgot. Sorry.” People have liked what was posted; there are hearts on a WhatsApp status. The speakers don’t tell us who could see those posts, so we shouldn’t guess. But the FTC warns that an online photo or message can reach a bigger audience than its sender expects. A picture can be both a sweet gesture and something worth checking about first.
And then, with the sudden turn of an ordinary conversation: four cellphones, and uncertainty about where the third or fourth one went. If one really is a misplaced Android phone, Google says its Find Hub can make a connected device ring—even on silent. We don’t know whether that applies here, or whether any phone was found. The exchange simply trails off there: a recording that wouldn’t start, a picture that wasn’t sent, and a reminder that the smallest acts of sharing deserve a moment’s thought.
